ImPACT

What is ImPACT Testing?

ImPACT Testing

Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing is a widely used, FDA-cleared computerized neurocognitive assessment tool designed to help evaluate and manage concussions.

This evidence-based test measures key aspects of brain function, including:

ImPACT testing is most commonly performed in two stages:

  1. Baseline Testing — Ideally completed when an individual is healthy (e.g., before the start of a sports season or activity with head injury risk). This creates a personalized "snapshot" of normal cognitive performance.
  2. Post-Injury Testing — Administered if a concussion is suspected or confirmed. Results are compared to the baseline to objectively detect changes in cognitive function that may not be visible on standard imaging like CT or MRI scans.

The test typically takes about 20-30 minutes to complete on a computer and is suitable for individuals ages 12 and up (with pediatric versions available for younger patients). It is not a standalone diagnostic tool for concussion but serves as a valuable component of a comprehensive evaluation by trained healthcare providers.

Benefits of ImPACT Testing

ImPACT is trusted by thousands of high schools, colleges, professional sports teams, military organizations, and clinical practices worldwide. It is part of a multimodal approach to concussion care, combined with symptom evaluation, balance testing, and clinical judgment.

If you participate in contact sports, high-impact activities, or are at risk for head injury, we recommend discussing baseline ImPACT testing with one of our providers.
